Tonight on The Backyard Barbecue: tracks from Future Islands and Dex Romweber Duo (both playing this week!); new records from Robes and Systems; dusting off some Rebar and Her Majesty's Secret Cervix just because.
Tonight's Thursday Night Feature on WXYC showcases the free jazz piano and sax work of Charles Gayle, a Buffalo native many of whose years were spent homeless on the streets of NYC. In late 1980s, however, he gained both recording contracts and a roof over his head, and has taught music intermittently in addition to releasing about thirty albums. Nine to midnight on WXYC.
So many good local shows going on this week, so The Backyard Barbecue tonight is all about who you can go see. Tune in from 8 to 9 PM to hear tracks from Nine Fingered Thug, Dillon Fence (playing at Lincoln Theatre on Friday!), Hammer No More The Fingers, Chuck Johnson, + more. PLUS new Black Skies. Finally!
Fusion Youth Radio Are y'all ready for Fusion Youth Radio, take two?! We're coming at ya again with an all new show on Sunday, October 30, at 5 pm on WXYC Chapel Hill! Tell your friends--radio produced by youth, for everyone.
Today on Hell or High Water (1-2PM) we conclude our month of jazz from the Southern Folklife Collection with some 1930s recordings by the Harlem Hamfats. Formed in Chicago but hailing from up and down the Mississippi, they played a mix of blues, Dixieland, and swing. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyjW8FTGxbI
